Just reading this and seeing how Charlie is similar to Duff, our degu, he is not quite 5 years old yet and had surgery on a stomach lump in March, it has only come back in the last week, taking him tonight to the vets, unsure what will happen, cost £150 last time and wondering if it is worth paying a similar amount if he needs surgery again, only for the lump to maybe come back, or let him go. (For want of a better phrase).

Yeah its such a hard decision, Charlies lump came back bigger and grew more aggressively .. Yeah it's really tough but I couldn't keep getting him put under again and keep prelonging the indefinite. As with the lump he was blind in one eye so he was getting more clumsy and struggling to climb. Maybe get a second opinion? Charlies came back within 2 months. Sorry I can't be much help, I wonder if anyone on here has had surgery for the second time ?

Duff has been to the vets, who said if he could operate, there wouldn't be enough skin to close the wound properly, so he is back home in a different cage, as annoying as ever, chewing the bars, but still with us, but the rate the lump has grown, no idea how big it will get.

Have you tried PAH for an opinion, it's hard as like with duff Charlie was still running around but you could see each day was getting worse and harder for him ...keep a close eye and just see if his behaviour changes, eating and drinking etc

Who is PAH?. He is asleep at the moment, no changes in eating and drinking, no change in anything actually, he is carrying on as normal.

Pets at home, they are good with exotic pets, aw Ok I guess just keep an eye on him, and maybe give them a ring or book an appointment and see what they say.

We find that Pets at Home vets are very hit and miss, more often miss than hit if I'm honest.
A second surgery to remove a lump that has grown back after only 3 months would not normally be recommended. The skin issue that your vet mentions is normally a valid concern with a first lump removal, so it makes sense that this issue gets worse for a second lump removal. I think keeping him as happy and comfortable as possible for as long as possible is probably the way forward, you could discuss painkillers with the vet if you start to see any changes in his behaviour. These changes might be quite subtle, things like weight loss, acting more fearful and timid, fussing at the lump or nearby, overgrooming his cagemates, spending more time on his own etc.

Should have realised, we take all our pets to Pets At Home, that is where Duff went last night. The lump Duff has now is bigger than the lump he had first time around. He has some Metacam, not sure if that will work or not. He cleans himself a lot, is that normal for a degu? As for a cagemate, he hasn't got one, when we first saw him, he was with another degu, when we went to buy him the next day, he was on his own, shop assistant said he was in a fight and attacked the face of the other degu, so Duff has always been on his own.

I adopted Charlie from PAH and he was on his own for the same reason, always fighting with other ones. He was a character tho 😌

Duff isn't doing too well, the lump on his stomach has got bigger and is now red with soreness, he sleeps more than usual, although he will come out when he hears me open his treat box, don't want him to catch his lump and have it burst open, so looks like he will be making his final visit to the vets this week.

Aw bless Charlie first time round was catching it on his wheel, then the second time round it was catching the floor. I just thought ive done everything I can, and like goolover said sometimes it's the last act of kindness. X

Poor little thing. It certainly sounds like an aggressive tumour for it to grow back so quickly

Duff made his final journey to the vet this afternoon, his lump was so big, he couldn't even sit down properly, in fact, he had 3 lumps, 2 on his stomach and 1 on his back leg, and another was just starting to grow under his front leg, was the kindest thing to do to let him go, even though it is very sad.

A picture of Duff, taken not long ago, doesn't show his stomach and the lump he had, he did enjoy a sand bath.
Thank you for your kind comments.
