Oh this sounds awful, could your friend ask the vet again to see the girl as she needs treatment asap. I know they said they cant see her but its a real emergency and for a degu to show pain like that she will be really suffering. I would take her up there begging and not leave until I saw a vet! Could the place where they were brought from not advise. Could be anything.....infection......allergy to bedding being used, its hard to guess really. Her eyes could be bathed in water that has been boiled and cooled down to keep them as clean as possible but unless she gets the right medication to help her i.e. antibiotics, her condition will get worse.

Ditto!
Any kind of infection in the eyes has the potential to cause blindness, and the pain is obviously unbearable! Even if a vet is not experienced with goos, he shouldn't have an issue with looking at eyes.

What kind of eye drops does she have? I think an antiobiotic eyedrop is probably a good place to start, but I think that will need to come from a vet, but as Bouncy says, they don't need to have degu experience to treat an eye issue. You could refer your friend and her vet to this safe medication list for degus, there are a couple of eye treatments listed, or if necessary perhaps you can get hold of them without prescription it depends what country you are in: www.degutopia.co.uk/deguvetlist.htm

What is she living in? It looks like a tank or something.

That poor creature cannot be left to continue like this. She needs serious medical care NOW! I understand vets in our country (I'm in Connecticut) may never have seen a degu before, but any exotics vet, who handles more than dogs and cats, those who would see guinea pigs and ferrets and such, would be able to diagnose the skin condition this poor degu has. Betadine and eye drops are NOT going to help her!
This could be mites, that cause mange, it is very painful for the animal and can ultimately cause death. It needs to be treated with ivermectin or another insecticidal treatment. If the dosage isn't right, the animal could die from being poisoned by the medicine. She HAS to get that degu to a small-animal/exotics vet ASAP, before it dies a painful death. And BOTH degus will need treatment, the other isn't showing symptoms but could be harboring the mites (or whatever is causing this) and then get sick later on, or infect or reinfect this degu, if she lives, or any future companions.
If your friend can't take care of this animal, she needs to give it to a rescue who can. Forget Christmas presents, she needs to tell her friends/family that her pet, who depends on her for a decent life, needed medical care.
Where in the US are you? Small chance, but maybe I can find someone to help.

Looking at the picture, that's a small fish tank, and filled with cedar chips? Tell your friend that the smell from cedar chips is TOXIC to small animals, especially in a glass tank which will have very little air circulation!
She needs to start doing her research and take proper care of her pets. To have let it get this bad is not right. To be keeping an animal in improper, potentially dangerous conditions, is not right. Forget Christmas, she needs to step up and do what she's obligated to by taking on these pets.
(sorry to be so harsh, but looking at that picture is horrific. that poor creature does not deserve to be forced into such a life.)

Oh that is nasty and painful looking, poor love. She definitely needs a vet, I'm afraid I feel that I have to be harsh here but your friend needs to find some way to afford one right now as leaving an animal in that state is a form of neglect.
It looks inflamed and like it's weeping from the image? My main concern for something so severe would probably be something like autoimmune disease or severe fungal infection, but you need an actual vet to give a diagnosis and proper treatment plan otherwise it's only going to get worse and they are only going to suffer more.
Edit: this started a week ago?! Think of how much worse it will be if you wait any longer than is necessary to get her treated properly.

I cant see half of the post but all I can say by everyone else responds, is that degu needs a vet, it's really upset how that degu is suffering , what if you was that degu? When you buy an animal dog, cat, degu, hamster etc you make a promise to care for that pet and wellbeing Clearly your friend doesn't know how to care for that ill degu etc putting her in a tank with wrong bedding, I'm sorry to be so harsh but when a animal is treated this wrong,it's very upsetting thinking how that pet is hurting and suffering.

I suspect we scared her off, but, wow, I have never seen anything looking so awful that was still in someone's care. If the poor little creature has passed, I can't help but think it would be a good thing, at least it's no longer suffering. so sad.

you are lucky. it was awful. I would really suspect mange.
The wood chips in the tank really looked like they could be cedar. Now wondering if that could have caused such an allergic reaction that the degu would have scratched until the fur was gone and the skin was crusty from oozing?

It's out of our hands now - we'll just have to hope for a good outcome.
