Rupert is doing great, no further tail chewing noticed.
I did the degu Burito with a towel to give him his meds, felt so sorry for him he made this little quite squeak like whimpering noises as if to sat mum why are you doing this to me I don't like that stuff (he wouldn't take it off his treats)
I have added the vets to the vet page, I didn't realise the vet that holds the exotic animal surgery also has a TV series. So he must be a good vet.
Rupert looses his balance too, if chew stopper doesn't work try this spray.
F10 Germicidal wound spray with incectide
It's for open wounds for small animals and tastes/smells nasty.
The vet gave it to me and it's really good. Never heard of it before. It was about £10.

Great, hope he continues to do well It's such a relief when you find a good vet, thanks for letting us know the details, I'll have to get the chart updated. F10 is pretty good stuff and very safe for small furry pets, you can use it for everything from cage cleaning to in a nebuliser. marmotta I think you need to find a better vet, I know we have at least one practice recommended in the Portsmouth area deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15521/vet-guide?page=1

What scares me, Marmotta, is the potential that the tail, damaged in such a manner, can keep dying back up the spine if it hasn't been caught in time, and to me it sounds like that has been happening. I can't help but wonder if there is already damage far enough along the spine to be causing the difficulty in movement that you can see in her hind legs.

Thanks so much ntg and moletteuk for your suggestions. Ricah is showing no other symptoms sudden or otherwise like you suggest - no head tilt or drooling and she seems her normal self in every way except her moving around. Her balance isn't good, but that started with the problems with her tail - degus obviously rely a lot on their tails for their agility. I think it is now time for another trip to the vet, although degus are such a rarity at our vet's I don't hold out much hope of sorting the problem out. If you can get to Emsworth downland vetianry grop they are amazing and have degu specialists there I know it's a bit far but I highly recommend them! If you need the number I can pass it on and the name of the specialist

Thanks again for your input. animalmadchloe, if you can give me that number of the vet in Emsworth please, I will certainly give it a try.

The contact details for AMC's vet are in the vet guide linked above, it's Downlandvets.co.uk but if you look at the recommended vet guide it also gives a couple of names for the particular people recommended.
