My 2 month old degu i noticed, under the base of his tail (sort of either side of his penis) has 2 swellings. i think they are testicles, but wanted to check if it is normal for them to be quite large? As I never noticed anything like it with my 7 month old degu!

www.degutopia.co.uk/sexingadultmale.jpgTake a look at that, it may help, I'm not sure if there is two lumps, from photos I've just looked at should only be two in total including penis. Sadly have no experience with male degus only females hope that helps

Male degus have their testicles inside their abdomen so it is very unusual to be able to see them. We have four boys and can't see any of them. It may be worth getting him looked over by a vet, if they are testicles, then I would imagine that makes it some sort of hernia.

I can see Spidey's when he's climbing the bars to squeeze himself between the edge of a level and the bars, but they're not pronounced. Can you post a photo?

I only have girls so no experience of this. They shouldn't normally be visible, but I wonder if warmer temperatures can cause them to be a bit more prominent?

Our males never had prominent lumps. It sounds strange to me, perhaps you can get a photo and post it?

When I get back next Tuesday, I'll take a pic of the only pose where I can see Spidey's tackle, and you can do a compare and contrast (once you stop laughing at what he's trying to do).

okay so I have a bit of good news, in which the swollen lumps are definitely his balls! i only found out as today Lemmi and Mowgli managed to knock this box of books, and Lemmi got hurt, which is where the bad news comes in. At first he looked awful, hunched and limping and so I panicked and rushed to the vets where luckily the exotics vet was still there. He had a look at Lemmi, who in the meantime had perked up a bit and looked quite bright eyed, but limping. He said it is either severely bruised or broken, but as he is still only a pup really his leg will heal very fast, he just needs rest and painkillers luckily!! I am so relieved, although my poor goo is in some pain i was terrified there would be something more... I will keep a close eye for any other signs that there is an underlying problem. I have Metacam to give him a drop a day! I was meant to go visit my family for a week however I cancelled and the next week is going to be lots of TLC for poor Lemmi. But yes, while I was there I asked the vet to check the lumps and he said they are just testicles so that is good! the silver lining aha.
I cannot recommend the vets at Chine House in Loughborough area, they have always been happy to stay late and their exotics vet is very trustworthy.

yeah he must! as my older male never showed anything lol. do you have any tips for giving the metacam? hes asleep now so i decided to not disturb him and do it when he wakes, so will give it a shot with the syringe! but if he struggles, i worry as his dose is so small (only a drop) i dont want to spill it everywhere? would mixing it with a drop of peanut butter work if i am geting desperate? Thank you!

Scaredygoo LOVES the Metacam, because it's sweet and tastes of honey. He not only drinks it straight from the syringe, he licks the outside of it clean too! When he first started having it, I put it on a piece of dandelion root, a massive favourite, and held it whilst he licked itnoff, before letting him take the root.

Not surprised, especially carrying around that "extra weight"

Lemmi is looking a lot more cheerful this morning! Hopped straight out of the cage on 3 legs, still not putting weight on it, but eating and acting normal. Have even had to shut them away again as he was running around like mad and i want him to rest it! Tried sneaking his metacam into some peanut butter, but he was far too suspicious and having none of it. So had to do the less polite way of shoving it in his mouth, but he forgave me quite quickly thank god!

Good to hear he is doing better today. Try putting the metacam on a tiny bit of shredded wheat, or dried veg, or slice of nut or whatever his favourite is. It's actually better if you can give metacam on food, but don't worry if the syringe is more reliable.

I took your advice and put the metacam on his favourite treat and he still turned up his nose, so had to syringe again! But he is already getting used to it, i think on the whole as he is only 2 months old he has been bouncing back from everything so well. And he has been surprisingly forgiving which is nice!

Much as he hates to admit it, he probably secretly likes the taste of it too
