Today he was doing better--able to stand, if precariously, able to walk a step or two, actually up on his feet, between falling over and over. Last night he couldn't get up on all four feet. His left side, especially back left, is clearly extremely weak. Yet he ate a whole bunch of his food, and was able to control his movements better than last night, which was just awful.
I just don't know. last night he looked like he wouldn't, shouldn't, make it to morning. Today, he looks like he has some days left. When we've had to make this decision before, it was very clear that it was time (cat with tumors that started bleeding, hedgehog who couldn't eat anymore due to jaw tumor), others have just weakened and quietly gone to final sleep in their beds. This up and down, unclear status is terrible. I myself can't drive, so had he been just as bad today we wouldn't have been able to take him to the vet until hubby came home from work at the end of the day. But, then he wasn't quite so bad. Tomorrow is Saturday, vets are only open until noon at best, and it's daughter's dance recital day, so there is no time to take him if he's worse in the morning. I don't even know if our vet, who we have only used for dog and cats, even does small animals. Probably never has even seen a degu. When we had the hedgehog, and were using a different vet who had trained in small animals, the entire office came in to see Hedgie because they'd never had one in before, and hedgehogs are nowhere near as rare here as degus are.
I just don't know.
Still hoping he just snuggles down in his favorite hut and goes to sleep for the last time. Warm, comfy, familiar, that's how it should be. No questions, no decisions, no choosing too early or waiting too long. Please just settle down and go to sleep.
