We've discovered in time that our boys favourite treats are Post's sthingy size Shredded Wheat (100% whole wheat, no sugar, yay!) and Que Pasa Organic Tortilla Chips unsalted (the best tortilla chips, yum yum for all of us ) (they may not be the best for the boys since like all tortilla chips are cooked in oil, but are alright as an occasional treat I think!) I clicked to preview my msg, and everytime it changes my one word to sthingy, it's supposed to be that round ended utensil! ughhh, weird!

My two boys Frit and Frat love Chex ceral, corn flakes and the shredded wheat. Along with there normal veggies of Sweet potatoe, aspergas and fresh peas. The like carrots better if I dry them first. I think they like the crunch. My kids are so excited to go out and pull dandelions now. (never would help before) but the boys adore them. cooing all the time they eat them.

Thank God for springtime...never a shortage for dandelions leaves, lol! Mine have been loving them. ;D Mama also loves dried carrots, haven't noticed much interest from the other two. Thanks for posting about different cereals - we'll have to put together a treat mix with some of those!

Hello guys, please keep in mind that cereal products, even though they might not contain sugar, are carbohydrate bombs and the degus body makes sugar of them. So please don't over do it, even though it is very difficult to resist the little beggars.

are there any recommended treats besides dandelion leaves and sweet potatoes? i seem to remember reading that too many carrots can be bad for them as well. i'm really looking for something i can give them as a treat when they've been very good, or when they're stressed out (if i have to handle them or something). is there anything i can use to coax them into my hand should i need to take them out?

To be honest Diet Otaku, any treat is not great for a degu. thats why they need to be fed only occasionally for safety, and then, its easier to allow them their favourites, like sweet potato, cereal, carrot, etc. Dandilion, grass, hay and lettuce are good anytime treats as they are safer than some of the others I mentioned, but the main diet needs to be the basic mix.
Although having said all that, my guys queue up for their bran flakes!

so the timothy hay should NOT be a regular "side dish" along with the mix? since i have 2 food bowls in the cage now, i have one with the mix, and one with hay in it. they definitely prefer the hay, but i still see them nibbling the mix regularly.

Hmmmmmmmm as I understood it Timothy Hay SHOULD be the mainstay of their diet along with the Degu pellets. Timothy Hay will satisfy their need to constantly be "grazing" much like horses - it' s not rich or high in nutrition so it is safe for them to have free choice. Degus appear to do best on high fiber, low fat, low protein, low carb diets much like ME!!

Aimeelou I thing that should read Spoon-sized Shredded Wheat....
My goodness it did it to me too! Ok the word that keeps getting convoluted is the eating utensil used to eat soup, cereal, pudding etc. Not the Knife, not the Fork but the Spoon!

the sp00n. it's getting censored because of the alternative meaning of the letters after the "s".

I 120XX012Z @ 1337 5P34K 101Z. I now know Diet Otaku real name: R2D2 ;D Hay is definelty a basic feed: It is natural, basically sugar and fat free, and the long fibres are important for their digestion (as said above, just like for horses).

ok, enuff of the chat speak, lol - that's a foreign language to some of us!
Lately, we've been giving our degus a couple cheerios for a treat - mabel is especially fond of them! i'm a little concerned about whether they are eating enough of the pellets, though - when we acquired them, there was an entire bin full of pellets for them, but it finally ran out and now we had to go out and buy some without knowing which kind they were eating, so in all likelihood we've altered their diet. But we are continuing to keep plenty of fresh timothy hay and alfalfa in the cage for them as well. Hopefully, they'll adjust okay.

i've read that chinchilla food is the best for them... not 100% sure though. i do know that for some weird reason my degus eat more pellets if there's only a little in the bowl than if i fill up the bowl. if i fill it up, they just jump in and scatter pellets everywhere, and then look at me later like "i'm HUUUUUUNGRY!!" well, if you didn't kick your food all over your room... >.>
