My degu has had really dry flaky ears for a couple of months. Sometimes if they are rubbed some of his ear will just crumble off. I have tried a cream to try and put some moisture back in them, which my degu hates. The flaky ears started from him fighting with my other degu, he injured his ear and from this he has had the bad ears. They don't seem to be causing him any pain but he ears do look rather tatty. Any help please

Is probably recommend a trip to the vets - it could be an infection which will need treatment

Thank you. After research I came up with that or mites myself I will get him books in asap. I thought it was best to ask someone on here as I have no hope in my local vet. I took one of my other boys at Christmas he had taken a bad fall and before even checking him properly they wanted to put him down due to him been brain damaged, he isn't and wasn't brain damaged.

Look for another vet, we have a few recommendations in our vet guide at the top of this board or sometimes you need to ring round and ask if they have degu experience. There is a slim chance of a circulation issue meaning that blood flow isn't quite normal to the ears. I would try making diet improvements focussed on improving skin and fur condition, things like linseed, hemp, sesame, milk thistle, generally a good oil seed selection will usually make a noticeable difference. Check out our feeding guide if oil seeds are new to you deguworld.proboards.com/thread/16425/degu-feeding-guideWelcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum. Two of my degus (Gi and Rei) are/were missing the edges of their ears because they flaked off. The vet thought that either: – one of the other degus they were with was chewing their ear tips, or – that they may have been born with a condition called vasculitis which causes the edges to flake off because the tiny blood vessels do not properly provide blood to that area. The flaking eventually stopped and both lived with ragged edged ears but were fine otherwise.
