I know . . . veterinary help kind of sucks here. I would like to see some of the helpful things they have in Britain here . . . like the PDSA.

Ya, I spent over two hours searching specifically for financial help yesterday and could not find anything that looked very promising, what little I could find was strictly for seniors or people with disabilities.

Hmmmmmm don't know anyone directly around that area. My vet just south of Calgary is awesome and not too bad - $100 exam fee (first visit only) and meds are $30 each but she will work with you.
You can go in under the assumption of only the exam fee and then go from there. Call around and check prices, you might have someone cheaper. Could also talk to the clinic about monthly payment plans - some will, some won't.
The degu might be hard to handle and not friendly because she is in pain. I am going to be a little harsh but if you can't get it treated then pay the euthanasia fee or rehome .... Not fair to force them to live in pain and suffer because you can't afford what they need. Rodents will only start acting funny when they are near deaths door because they are prey and evolved to never display weakness.
I really do wish I could do more for you ....
In the mind time until you are able to get to the vet or rehome her, go and buy baby polysporin drops and use those as per directions. This is just a temporary fix and will only help (might not though) if there is an infection. Good luck!

I know it is not fair to him, it is just so hard hard to put him down when he is acting so normal. But that is probably what I will have to end up doing.
I don't think the difficulty in handling him is because of this (though it could certainly factor in) because he is no harder or easier to handle than Dombey. and reacts in very similar ways to him and other shy degus I have had. Thanks for all the help and feedback.
