Hi, this is my first post on here - apologies for any mistakes. I'm looking for advice on if my current cage is big enough for 5 degus. I currently have three boys but I've recently seen two more in pets at home that really look like they could do with a good home. The cage measures 180 cm x 95 cm x 55 cm and it has been updated with 3 more large running wheels, a much larger house, hammocks and glass water bottles. Any help would be greatly appreciated! link : imgur.com/f2khlML

Hi, doing a quick check on the CARA (recommend cage running area, your current abode offers just over half the recommended 30,000 for five goos.
Your habitat is quite tall, so are the levels adjustable? Could you add some more?
Another consideration would be what you would do if the newbies didn't get accepted by your current clan?

Thank you for your reply Ah okay..yes it's a DIY cage so I could add more levels! I also let my degus out for an hour a day if that makes a difference. I've had to do an introduction before and it took a long time, but I have another large cage that could house the two degus if introductions failed. I just feel so sorry for the ones in pets at home..living in a tiny enclosure!

I know, it's tough. Every time I walk past one of those places, I have to go in and talk to the goobies

I saw an identical little girl to ice in there the other day, stuck in a cage with 6 other goos! It's ridiculous. I keep trying to figure out could I fit another one but the OH would have a fit if I got another one

Here, have a look at our forum cage size recommendations. deguworld.proboards.com/thread/9396/forums-cage-size-recommendations It will give you a good idea of what we are basing our requirements on. I wouldn't try fitting two more degus into that cage. Even though you might get another two full levels in there, it will be rather squishy, and it still won't be enough space. I fear that you will find yourself facing a breakdown of the bonds between your current three, and then you may have to separate even them. If you do have another large cage and would like to bring the other two home, and are willing to keep them in that cage, then perhaps you can do that? I don't wish to be nosey, but is the other large cage that you have, the P@H Thickets cage? If so . . . it is much too small for two degus. However it is a big seller for P@H and they won't stop recommending it for degus.

Yes, I feared that might be the case If they're still there in a months time I will strongly consider using my other cage. In Ireland degus are almost completely unknown so the chances of them getting a good home are slim. Nope its a large converted parrot cage. Agreed, those pets at home cages are awful..I can't imagine how they're allowed promote them.

I was in my local P@H over the weekend and there was a single degu in the cage. I asked why he was on his own and got told "because we sold the other one".... AAAARRRGGGHHHH!

Grrrrrrrrr that peeves me! Having said that, local petshop told me someone came in at the weekend to buy a guinea pig cage because their rats had just had babies. They suspect they're not too worried about them escaping, as it sounded like they were planning on feeding them to their snakes.......... They refused.

I think with two more full shelves it meets the minimum for five, but as DC says, it's not necessarily that simple, but if you have another good cage on hand and would be prepared to keep them separate, then I don't see why you shouldn't get them.
