I finally got the animal trap to stay set late on Sunday night, virtually a week on from when Horace went missing. And over night it caught a squirrel! Am about to go and let it out.

Blimey! You seem to be catching everything BUT Horace!

Regarding the MP3 player and portable speaker I bought last week, it wasn't until Sunday night after I had bought an additional cable to connect the two that I was able to put it outside playing degu sounds on loop. Unfortunately, even at maximum volume it was barely audible.
On Monday night I placed a small box filled with hay and degu food underneath the balcony and have left it there, but there's no sign of it having been used.
I'm getting really quite depressed with this now. Not only that, but after I let my two remaining degus out of their cage, one of them, Humphrey, just went and sat on one of my chairs, silently watching me. I feel terrible for him, terrible for myself, and of course, terrible for Horace. The only one out of the four of us that is fine is Harry, who is his permanent wild self.

Oh how terrible Matt, don't be too hard on yourself. Ok sure the others are just a tad confused and will adjust.
Did you have any luck leaving food out inside incase he's managed to get under the floors/in the walls?

This isn't meant to be a flippant or insensitive comment, so please don't take it that way, but you can't keep blaming yourself for something that you can't undo. I know Horace was your favourite, but he is also a highly intelligent creature who made a slight error of judgement when he made his leap and let curiosity get the better of him. When our goos try to be adventurous, there's not a lot we can do to stop them! Mischievous little so and sos.... I do hope he realises Wimbledon Common isn't the best place for degu and comes back, but he might not. All you can do is keep trying to tempt him back, and we'll all keep our fingers crossed for you. Your other goos need you right now too; by the sounds of it more Humphrey than Harry. Humphrey doesn't understand where his brother is, and why he's gone. Harry might still be his crazy self, but I'm sure he misses him too in his own way. I'll keep checking for updates - you're beginning to sound a bit like snow white with the squirrel and mouse - and if I get any more ideas for finding him, I'll post them.

Have you tried the local RSPCA or other rescue centres in the area? He would have been taken there if someone's found him.
There is still a chance he will come home.
Don't give up hope.
