Makoto has an infection of his "prepuce" (that's the sheath of his penis, I think?). The vet drained a lot of puss from it and now I am to dab polysporin on it and give him Baytril twice a day for 14 days. He is so-o-o difficult – almost impossible – to medicate via syringe. I am going to put the drops on treats, let them dry, and then put him in a carrying case to make sure he eats it all. Hope that works or I will be spending all night trying to give him his dose.
Vet thinks that maybe he was bitten there by Roku. Makoto and Roku don't live together yet but they do have daily playdates together – now these need to be totally supervised. I have never seen them bite each other – but Makoto will roll around on his back in front of Roku. Gheesh.

Oh, Yasmin!
On the plus side, this should heal, and you can then both get back to "normal" x

Do you have someone who can assist you? I have found with Nige that I can hold him fairly loosely and my husband 'encourages' him to bite the syringe and then squirts the meds in. Sometimes he is very good and we can get him out, medicated and back in within a few minutes, other times he's not quite so helpful, but we always get there... My big worry is that he'll bite me out of frustration, but...touch wood...he hasn't yet...

Yes, Kins, that is exactly what we've ended up having to do. (Didn't want to have to get my husband involved – he's already having to feed Jesper via the feeding tube in his neck and give the cats all of their meds, but I really need his help with this.)

There was a big yellow pus pocket a few days ago but it burst and scabbed over, and then the scab fell off. Each day, the swelling goes down a bit. Today he was bleeding from it but that stopped on its own. We could see his penis – not sure if it is prolapsed or just sticking out because of the infection. My husband tried to gently rub it back in but it didn't go back all the way. We are getting ready now for Makoto's twice daily antibiotic administration and polysporin rub – will see what it looks like now.

Penis is still visible but the prepuce (cone?) is approaching normal size.

That is good! Just to ask, have you looked to make sure there isn't a ring of hair around the penis that could prevent it from retracting all the way?
Sorry, but I was rolling my eyes as I typed the above, LOL! The things we discuss and ask about when we are talking degus! Can you imagine if we women were asking a similar question about our hubbies? ROFL

Ohh poor little mite. Mr grey had a large pus pocket on his cone last year it was massive. Caused him to prolapse. Cleared up really well though. It was like one of those massive whiteheads you really want to get your fingers around and squeeze!!!

Makoto's penis is still prolapsed – it doesn't seem to be bothering him but we can't get it to go back in. Thinking of taking him to the vet.

I kept it clean with boiled cooled water and applied vaseline. I've used ky jelly before but found vaseline better. It slowly went down and went back inside. I did end up popping the pus bubble, by accident I was having a look after bathing and it just went pop! Then it all healed up very quickly xx

It was improving so I stopped the routine with the Vaseline. Husband and I had a look at him yesterday morning – Makoto's penis was even further out than it had been before. Put on the Vaseline and then called the vet office. They advised I bring him in as soon as possible in case the penis starts to dry out. Got an apptmt for late in the day with Dr Clement. Got him there and, lo and behold, it had gone in again. Vet told me to use KY jelly instead of Vaseline next time it happens. Just relieved it went all the way in this time.
