I'm concerned about the bar spacing on the cage my degu's have had to move to; the majority of the cage is covered in wire, but the front has exactly one inch spaced bars. Whisper, forever the more curious of the two, has stuck her nose through, but she hasn't managed any further. The top also has one inch spacing between the bars, but it's rather tall, and though they do climb the bars up, I don't believe they can escape through the top, as they always turn around a few inches short of the top and scurry back down. If this is unsafe, I'd be more than content to put wires up where the larger spacing is left, but I thought I'd ask first.

We usually encourage a cage that has one centimeter spacing, because young degus are very capable of getting out through bars that are spaced wider apart. Since you are willing it would probably be wise to put some wire in that will eliminate all possibility of escape.

1" would normally be alright for good sized adults, 3/4" is good for all adults, 10mm for babies.
