I have been trying for years to find a decent budgie forum and I thought that one might be okay. Guess it isn't – that's very disappointing. Other than being pissed at not having their toys, are the degus doing okay? I would be tempted to throw the whole cage in the garbage and get a new one. Did your vet do a scraping to look at under the microscope? It is important to get a positive identification of what the pests are before a proper way of killing them all can be found and how long and where they can live without access to a blood source.
I will try and do some more research when I have a chance.

He had a look under their wings and checked other places then said he will.give me the spot in which would cover mites and lice. I trusted his judgement as he's the vet I see for the degus and apparently the avarian/ exotic specialist there lol. The degus are fine just bored I think lol

I think the steam cleaner sounds like a great idea for treating the cages and room. I think the vet office is the best place to get advice on how to treat the whole room and general protocol.

Some more info: www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/mites.htmlI meant the bird cage assuming it's the one you are finding mites in the cracks in. You can pressure-wash it but you would have to do this over and over again until you were sure that all the mites were gone. Steaming might work too. But if you are as paranoid as I am, and depending on how much a new cage would cost, I would just buy a new one. That way you would be 100% sure that whatever mites were hiding in the cracks are gone. Also go online, google the breeder's name and see if there are other people with the same issues and how they have dealt with them. Or go back to the breeder and take a look at the other birds and cage – if you see mites/lice, then it might be time to raise a stink because if you have to get an exterminator in or if you have to get new carpeting/bedding etc., you might have a case to sue them for some of the costs. Definitely ring up the vet's office and get their advice on what to do regarding you and your home. Do you live in a multi-tenant dwelling or a single family home? If it's multi-tenant then it is possible that, as far as the red mites are concerned, they are responsible for bringing them in.

I only found a few in the cage tonigt! I gave the cage a good clean with disinfectant and boiled water and got rid of them all I'm sorta hoping that I have caught it early!! I did my home woth eucalyptus even mopped the floor amd sprayed the bed and sofa smells lovely I has have some in an oil burner near the degu cage dunno if it will.work but worth a try x

Sounds like you're starting to get on top of it! I second Yasmin's comment about doing some research on the breeder. If they are the source, then it's more than just you affected, and they will have to meet the costs! Hope the googoos are still being patient

Hope the googoos are still being patient Tbh I think she breeder was some shank who just rehomed birds bred them and sold them on I found her on a Facebook rehoming page. She lives in a council estate and her house was full of birds and skanky looking people. Maybe alarm bells should have rang then..... I'm.trying to keep ontop if it using a different disinfectant different days jusy so the buggers don't get used to one lol. Do.you think I could put an oil.burner with eucalyptus in the kitchen with the birds or would it be too much for their lungs? The degus are being tolerant I think the mr grey and earl r still winding each other up! Probably because there's nothing left in their cage to preoccupy them. But there getting lots of treats dint want to handle them case I have mites on me and pass them on lol

Awwww bless! When they get some toys back, they won't know what to do with themselves! Might still be worth doing a Google. If she's on fb advertising her birds, she's probably on other adoption sites too. Even if she's rehousing rescues, she still has to maintain good standards. If all her birds are infested like that and she's not done anything, it's cruelty.

If all her birds are infested like that and she's not done anything, it's cruelty. I agree that, if she is not doing anything to help the birds in her care, it is a case of animal neglect and should be reported. However, it could also be that it was just an unfortunate situation/timing – I think you would have noticed if any of the birds were in distress or looked ill/itchy. Do not burn the eucalyptus oil anywhere near the birds unless you read up somewhere that it is safe. It takes very little toxic inhalants to kill a budgie or scar it's respiratory system. Does seem like you are getting the situation under control. Don't become discouraged if there's another flare up in a week or so – that might happen but it should be not as intense as what you've had to deal with.

Just want to caution you, AMC, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oil are both things that could irritation to your degus airways. I wouldn't be putting anymore into the air.

Oh absolutely! Was just thinking worse case scenario, and just doing a quick check. It could just be she's taken in a random sick bird....

I.don't know she had alot of birds and it wasn't the cleanest of houses. My auntie gave me a tip about putting a white sheet over the cage at night apparently the mites are attracted to it and then boil the buggers in the machine.... She said she did it when they had mites xx

Yuck! That thread doesn't work I clicked on it and nothing happend. I've found about 1 red mite today at the weekend found about 20. I haven't seen anything crawling in the degu cage at all I've been having a good look, trying the white cloth tonight on bird cage see whats clinging to it in the morning..... I really think we've caught it just in time and I'm being very careful that when I'm cleaning or handling the birds I'm disinfecting my self and where ive been. Fingers crossed thank you all for helping so much!!
