Shelves, rather than complete levels, are less suitable. They are great as access to upper complete levels, but should not be your main surfaces for most of the cage. It would end up like living in a highrise apartment building that doesn't actually have floors but just random slabs sticking out from the sides that humans must jump between. Big enough to sit or lay on, but that's about it. Degus need surfaces they can run, forage, and generally move about on.

No reason you can't also put shelves or hammocks across the middle of the cage to stop falls and add space. deguconvert is right about accents and idioms changing really quickly from town to town in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland). newdegus - I will stop the language chat on your thread. You're almost in Canada yourself!

If you can stretch to 40" long by 20" deep it's better so they have a good length for a run. To fit the base and two full area shelves, you will need a height of around 44". This will give you 2,300 sq inches total running area which is just enough for 3 degus, so you have a bit to spare for two, you could reduce the 20" depth a little if you wanted to or one of the full area shelves could be a little smaller.

Wow sounds like these two had a very lucky escape from their previous home. We have also just adopted two little boys thankfully their cage was clean although they were only fed pellets without anything else and both had the bath left in with them with some very strange sand init and both have very dry skin.
This has been an interesting read Grammar wise, I often forget that our phrases can be lost in translation even to other English speaking countries. (UK here) as for the changing in the way we talk county to county are different then every county has probably 3 variations (fish wife, normal and posh lol) as a Hampshire girl in Wiltshire its interesting as my children have the Wiltshire/Somerset twang (English Farmer talk lol) but mummy and daddy both still have their Hampshire accents (Snob accent according to all my Wiltshire friends lol.
Best of luck with your new family members x x
