I know it probably isn't a brilliant solution but I am no longer able to allow my girls free run of the living room and the jump over the top of the run they have. They live in an adventure cage but I still want to be able to let them out. I figured the bigger the ball, the better and not for long periods of time. I am concerned about over heating etc. Does anyone have any experience with this?

They would run it up against something until they had the door against it, but off the ground. Then they would scratch and pull on the door until they twisted it off. Walls, shoes, table leg, my dog, they used anything. Other people experiences may vary.

Orrin's experience (very interesting) might tell you what degus think of exercise balls!

We had a similar experience with our girls, although a slightly more brutal aproach: they worked out that if they ran at the wall hard enough then it would split round the middle. We gave up after a few attempts.

I don't agree with putting animals in balls, it's not very humane, and in this weather it's going to get very hot in those balls, can you not make a lid for the run? So they can't get out

These balls cannot substitute a playing pen. So if you are not able to let them run free, it would be better to leave them in their cage with a running wheel. Those balls are also sold here but considered as cruelty towards the animals by a society of veterinarians and lots of other people.
Have a look at the wikipedia of Hamster balls. It is very interesting that the English version just mentions minor problems whereas the German one warns to use them giving a number of reasons. So if you have a chance to use a translator have a look at the German version. I can also give you more sites which explain the reasons for not using them.

I have been looking at playpens instead. I have found a Pets at Home folding mesh and wood run which is 1.2m square. Would this be big enough?

So if you have the place to put it, go ahead for it. Maybe there is a chance to combine 2 of them. Many, many people don't offer a playing pen or can't even do this for several reasons. I am one of those.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I tried putting my degu in a ball and I've never seen him so scared. But a friend of mine put her degus into a ball once before and they were totally fine with it.
Depends mostly on their personality, but as long as you're keeping an eye on them and watching to make sure they don't get hurt or panicked, it's worth a short.
With that in mind, I think a playpen is a much better idea. It gives your degus a chance to explore better, and if you add some toys and/or pillows/boxes/anything small that they can maneuver around, they'll enjoy it more than being trapped in a ball.

I now have the most amazing play pen and I'm much happier knowing there are in there. I'm even able to leave them in it when I go to work ?
