Hello everyone, so I've had my degu Chocolate for roughly 4-4 and a half year he's roughly that old too, I've been using this site to help me with a lot of my questions though I cannot find anything about my problem now;
So Today I noticed that Chocolate had his penis out and it looked sore and uncomfortable for him, he keeps licking it and such this only leaving him squealing out, I don't know if he needs a vet, or if it's something not so serious? I'm just concerned about my boy, he is currently alone as his brother passed away about a year ago now so I really want him to be okay. c: thank you for reading!

We call this a prolapsed penis (if you want to know what to search for), it can be serious if the problem continues for any length of time. He should see the vet ASAP and you should ask the vet to check if there is any hair wrapped around the base of the penis as this has cropped up as the cause on the forum a couple of times lately. The vet will probably give you some kind of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic cream to dab on to lubricate the penis and try and get it to stay back in, something like Canaural eardrops for dogs or something like that. Try and get him to the vets today and in the meantime you can try and dab some vaseline on to get it lubricated and protected right away.

If you are able, check to see if there is any hair ringing/choking the penis and preventing it from retracting back in.
