Hey guys
Just need some of your thought's really!
I'm kinda stuck with a smallish cage at the mo but am trying to find a way to get a bigger and more efficient cage but not sure if that's possible but I can see from watching them move that they should have more space. I can possibly put it in front of the radiator but will have to turn it off and will stick quite a bit into the room and will possibly have to forego essential kitchen space. Even if I find a way around it now, my one concern is that it seems highly unlikely that I can stay in the flat I am now past another three years as I live in a city which has always been okay and has managed to avoid some of the inner city problems that can happen for the most part but appears to be going downhill quite fast in recent months (many attacks with knives etc almost on a weekly basis now on my road alone and I live in a better bit and police appear to have lost control and attitudes of the people here have become downright openly disgusting and my daughter is hearing it constantly). When my daughter finishes infant school which she is starting in September, I cannot imagine any schools round here now that I am happy to send her too after that one so will have to move out of town. I am extremely unlikely to get somewhere with the space of the flat I live in now for the money I can spend. If I can find ways of ensuring they're happy and find enough ways to avoid too much conflict in the cage they are in now - would it better to keep to this rather than finding a way to give them a larger cage now and then being forced to downsize the size of their cage back to this type when I move in 3 years when they have been used to more space. I can't imagine any animal accepting this without huge problems?
I really just can't make a decision on it so any thoughts would be appreciated.
Having said that, I found these metal bird breeding cages and have seen them come up second hand really cheap every now and again so was wondering if you can see any flaws to using these as if they are cheap enough, I can keep my eye out over the next six months/year and get them and store in my mum's attic until I decide what to do or what position i am in later if I decide a bit risky to put in now or on standby in case I start to get too much conflict in the cage I have now. They are fully metal (powder coated steel) and enclosed which would help keep mess to a minimum. I like the wooden home made version in the same style but have no outside space to do woodwork so just not viable and single working mum so time is often limited in terms of always having to replace parts of it. They are quite flexible as have dividers you can take in and out, the front caging is easily fully removed for cleaning, there are holes in backs and sides of metal to attach things with and stackable so easy to move to new house also. Each double breeder cage is 100 x 50 x 50 and I would probably look at getting two meaning a total of 100 x 100 x 50 and maybe a third at a later date. The only thing I would have to do is put a hole in between the two for access between the levels but my brother does duct work so easy for him to do this for me.
I thought I would check with you guys first in case there are issues with this setup that I cannot see as new to keeping degus
