Hello! I got a pair of degus from a pet shop on friday evening. I left them to settle but noticed that at least one had a wet mouth and I have had them to the vet. One has a nice dry mouth but the other one definately has large wet patches. I have been prescribed metacam for thewetmouthed degu and she is booked in to have a sedation and a good look in her mouth on thursday (she wouldn't sit still for her mouth looked at with the doofer - technical term ) to be cancelled if the metacam makes her improve We discussed her options-if this is a very severe thing at her young age I think it would be kinder to put her to sleep than put her through repeated stressful situations. If it is not severe my vet agrees that a few treatments and proper diet (they will be getting a few pah pellets and lots of hay and forage with me) might just fix it. Am i right here? and if the poorly one has to be put to sleep how complicated are intros? I know the pet shop are liable to fob me off and say it can't be done, i'm also wary that if they did give me a new one she would have the same issue. I expected they would have to have vet care at some point but this is not what I expected <script id="UZ_script_codeUser" type="text/javascript">var _uz_codeuser='C517S16_830';</script><script id="UZ_script_JS" type="text/javascript"></script>

I would wait and see what the outcome is after they have had a good look in its mouth it could be something simple as a spur on the rear teet, How old are your degus? Have you informed the let shop? Because if there is a serious issues which they have been neglecting then they should be footing your vet bills and you could report them.for failing to seek medical attention for a suffering animal, when we bought ours they were infected with ring worm and we didn't realise until we.got home and I phoned up and make a complaint and they paid for all the treatment, I hope the issue is not serious enough that hour degu needs putting to sleep, if that's the case I find that very disturbing that the let shop let an amimal get that bad Where are your degus from? Pets at home?

yup pets at home and they have agreed to pay the bills. My vet had a device to look in the mouth but she wouldn't let him have a good look so shes having a bit of gas so they can have a good look. Euthanasia is only if my vet thinks she will have a life plagued by issues and be miserable but i'm hoping that it won't come to that. I haven't found fitting names but I'm already really fond of them. They are only young which is making me wonder if its quite serious.

Sigh.. so sorry that you have to deal with this so soon. Lucky goo to have you to get her the vet help she needs.
Whether the metacam works or not, she will need the vet to look into her mouth and do dental work. It's probably just a spur that needs to be removed. Definitely don't think putting her down should be considered at this point – I have degus who have had a spur removed and have been fine for months and months and months. (You just don't know.) Also, I don't believe dental work is that stressful for a degu - biggest stress is on you, on your time and on your finances.
Hopefully her issue is a result of improper care, and that with better diet and better care she will have many healthy happy years ahead of her.

Okay thank you for this I guess I am just panicking about worst case scenarios and stress on her. She's going to have lots to chew so with any luck it will be a one off I feel a lot more reassured <script id="UZ_script_codeUser" type="text/javascript">var _uz_codeuser='C517S16_830';</script><script id="UZ_script_JS" type="text/javascript"></script>

Let's just wait and see what the vet finds with his/her doofer (rofl it's called a scope, but doofer is better). I think that spurs should be unlikely in a very young degu, perhaps she has injured her mouth in some way, maybe she has been chewing the bars or something she shouldn't. If it is something serious, you can always tell the vet you need a couple of days to decide and come and talk it over with us.
I don't suppose there were any degus left in the group that you got this pair from?
I hesitate to mention this when you already have enough to deal with, but the PAH cage isn't going to be big enough for them, so you might want to look into that at some point.

A few of our degus have ended up having dental work and as others have said, other than the finances and time they seem to bounce back from it quite quickly. Will be interesting to find out what the issue is, and the fact that you have picked up on it and acted on it are great.

There were two others, hopefully they have had those both checked. Now I'm calmer I honestly don't think she will need putting to sleep. They don't have the pets at home cage, but it is around that size it is only temporary though I have a much bigger cage to move them into, I was honestly just a litle wary of moving them into a ton of space when they were so jumpy still and have to do lots of chasing them around. But they will be going in the big cage soon and they are going to love it I already have their litle characters worked out the wet mouthed one likes to eat a lot and the other one likes to run in the wheel Going to read the other link now, haven't worked out how to multiquote yet thank you everyone that has offered advice <script id="UZ_script_codeUser" type="text/javascript">var _uz_codeuser='C517S16_830';</script><script id="UZ_script_JS" type="text/javascript"></script>

Great job remembering Ilikedegus - I knew we had seen something like this before, but I couldn't remember any details. I think this is really likely, especially as it's PAH in the same county, was it the Barnsley shop you got them from, Nyanjai?

No, they weren't from the Barnsley store, though I expect they all come from the same place. Poor little things, they are going to be so spoilt from now on in though, even thinking of getting them a nice brand new cage instead of using the one i already have <script id="UZ_script_codeUser" type="text/javascript">var _uz_codeuser='C517S16_830';</script><script id="UZ_script_JS" type="text/javascript"></script>

Yeah, the breeding place is one massive place in Essex as far as I know, I was thinking along the lines of them not eradicating the bacteria from the Barnsley shop, but the same thing could happen in any of their shops - they are unlikely to have eradicated the bacteria problem in the breeding centre.

Ahh Ruby has her mouth looked at while she's under tomorrow I'm all nervous for her. Got faith in my vets though ,they have operated on my rats before so that reassures me. She's just so small and had so much to deal with so far :\ <script id="UZ_script_codeUser" type="text/javascript">var _uz_codeuser='C517S16_830';</script><script id="UZ_script_JS" type="text/javascript"></script>

An update for anyone following- Ruby has had her mouth looked at under anasthetic and her teeth are perfectly fine she does have an inflamed mouth though so we are giving her another week on metacam and my vet is giving me some antibiotics. Can't wait until I can go and pick them both up :3

That sounds like good news then. Pleased it's not teeth trouble

So it does sound like it could be the same issue as previously encountered in the Barnsley store...bizarre but certainly one to bear in mind for the future. Glad to hear we have a positive outcome.

Thank you both, I was certainly relieved when he said her teeth were fine. Going to have another good look at that thread and perhaps make notes for when I pick them up (memory like a sieve) Probably going to pets at home afterwards so will more than likely end up buying them something else xD They already have seeds, hay, timothy hay, dandelion and oat mix, readigrass on the way, seeds to grow forage, looking at buying a new cage instead of just doing my old one up....spoilt little ladies...hoping I can start enjoying them now

Thanks for the update.
I hope the problem clears up soon, poor Ruby must've been uncomfortable - Metacam has surely helped her feel more comfortable.
I hope you can all relax and enjoy each other now ;-)
