Has anyone noticed in the more senior goo's a slight failing in eye sight. Pepper is 7 and Mash 6.5 and I've noticed these two,s eye sight does not appear to be as good as It once was ?

This is quite normal in senior degus to lose eye sight, normally by developing cataracts. I have a degu 8+ years that is not only blind but also deaf. About 1-2 years ago she started to lose eye sight. Now it is not only cataracts but a completely blind eye.

Older degus suffer from similar problems we humans do: loss of sight and hearing, tooth problems, weight loss, arthritis, ataxia, loss of coordination, etc. They can also start to behave strange (different to their normal behaviour). You might also notice some changes in fur, form of their ears, the way they sit when eating... Having old degus (and I don't mean 4-5 year old ones) is a challenge that might require some changes in their housing and diet, but it is just nice to see these grannies and grandpas, how they manage their daily life, how they get along in their cage. They are adorable little personalities and have something, younger degus don't have.

Our oldest boy, Mater, is going on for 9 now and he still seems a perfectly happy, healthy goo. He has what we think is a touch of arthritis so he walks rather than runs in the wheel and takes things a bit steady when jumping or climbing (he and his friend are now in a large, single level cage with a few ledges so he doesn't have to jump or climb so much). His eye sight, teeth and general demeanour all seem fine, he's just a little slower than the younger lads which is actually quite sweet when it comes to cuddles; he's more inclined to sit quietly and be fussed.
