I think I'm going to attempt potty training. I really have little hope this will work. My boys love to spray everything. Either way, I don't want to use those plastic corner litter trays, any other ideas? Care to share your experience with this?

In my opinion degus are not potty trainable. I honestly don't think they actually seem to have much control over their toileting most of the time. Mine just do it wherever, whenever they like, normally while running on their wheels.
I've not really heard of any successful attempts at potty training them, so I'd be tempted to say don't waste your time...
Do you have a wire cage?

I dunno, when I clean the boys out there are definite "areas" where they choose to pee and poop the most. Particularly in the corners of the cages where they face the next cage, presumably as a boundary setting thing? I find poop everywhere, but there are places like under the wheel where there are higher concentrations. So, I guess pay attention to where they already mess and then work around that?

My girls wee everywhere, but they do have potty areas where quite a lot of it goes, especially near places they like to hang out. I use ceramic tiles or saucers or square side plates go into corners quite well, and I have a small terracotta trough lying on its side that they use too. You may need to velcro down saucers or wedge them in with other things because they will want to move them out of the way, or I have some quarry tiles that are too heavy for them to move.

Yes, I have a wire cage. I think my degus have a couple spots where they like to do their business, and then the spraying as a territorial thing. A terracotta trough is a great idea! I was thinking of using ceramic/glass baking pans too. What do you use as litter?

To keep areas of the cage clean, what I do is, just before vacuuming, I will blow all of the mess off of the shelves and out of the cage, then vacuum it up.

I know it's better for keeping the litter in, but my lot hate anything with a lipped edge, they get really annoyed and try to destroy the edge or refuse to wee there any more.
I just use the same substrate as everywhere else, aubiose and fitch mixed together.
