I got my two male 1 year degu's from a guy who was feeding them Tesco hamster food. since I have had them (3 weeks) I have been giving them pets at home degu pellets, but they don't seem to like them, I don't see them eating them very often and there is always plenty of food left in the bowl, should I persevere with the pellets or try something different?

Clever degus you have! Pellets are not suitable as (permanent) degu food (so I am not surprised that they refuse to eat them), but the hamster food isn't suitable either. Have a look at the nutrition section as there is so much information about leaves, flowers, herbs and seeds (in your other post moletteuk already posted some links). I am sure your degus would prefer those. In the meantime it is very important to offer them a very good hay. I do not consider hay as main food for degus but they have to eat enough both in quantity and in quality (regarding nutrition values, energy, etc.).

Pets at Home nuggets are often not well liked. See commercial food chart deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17365/commercial-food-chartIf you want to continue with some commercial food, it is best to mix two or three together. In addition to this, work on increasing the quantity and variety of forage that you offer.

Mine really love Selective Supreme Science Degu Food, it is a big blue bag, and can be found in Pets At Home. It contains a bit of basil, which must taste good to the degus, as they love it. I also give them the Mr. Johnson's degu pellets, and they don't like these as much, but eat a few. You can get some herb and flower mixes in some pet shops as well. They can be fed in small amounts reasonably often, but check that the mix is OK for degus.

It's because the mix I buy contains a reasonably high amount of sugar, and pieces of stuff like carrot so I only give them a small amount.

Ideally you should pick all that out then they can have more herbs... All the feeds I buy have odd bits they can't have and I sit for an hour or so on the floor picking out all the dried carrots, beetroot, apple and puffed rice! Boring but at least I can add in as many herbs as i like, herbs and plants need to be a big or main part of there diet
