I was petting..What I believe to be the female degu Daisy..and Gizmo..My male was making weird noises..He'd kinda make the same noise..When I try to pet him..What do you think it means? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I did only just get them today too..So I know they're not used to me yet.

what does the noise sound like? degus make a variety of different noises that mean different things. when they chatter or grind their teeth, they're upset/annoyed. if they're making this "BEEP BEEP" squeaking noise, they're scared. if they're making a kind of chirping/chittering noise, they're happy. they make this noise a lot when they groom each other. mine also make this kind of growling squealing noise, which is like "BACK OFF," but they only direct it at each other - usually when one of them is trying to push the other off the running wheel.

Yea, it does kinda sound like a Beep Beep sound...And he also grinds his teeth. I guess it's still going to be awhile...Until they're used to me ><

yeah, if he's grinding his teeth it's probably just the stress of being in a new home. it's recommended that you don't handle them for the first 3 days or so in their new environment, so they can get used to their surroundings without being poked and prodded and such. how long have you had them?

Hi Diva It will take a while for them to get used to you, but beleive me, when they do, its so rewarding! Just take your time and try just putting your hand in the cage and let them explore your hand, to get used to your smell, rather than picking them up. Aimeelou

That is a good idea..but I just get scared about being bitten..Gizmo already bit my brother..but then again..he doesn't know when to leave anything alone...When I tell him to stop...My mother gets in on it..Tell me to leave him alone..I try to explain it to her..but its like she doesn't understand..

Some good suggestions about allowing you Degus to come to you and explore your hand while you quietly stay as still as possible. Mocha was very timid at first. Then as time went on she would approach and touch my hand before running off. Next came the stage where she'd bite me - not hard - just testing to see though sometimes drawing blood. If she bit too hard I'd say no and leave for the day. Pretty soon she learned if she wanted me to stay she could not bite me. I've had her since February of this year. April she surprised me with a litter of 9 pups (sold to me as a male!) Just this weekend when I let her and her smallest female I kept for company for her out in my bathroom, Mocha scampered up my shirt and sat on my shoulder. I was so thrilled. She then groomed my hair and climbed on top of my head!
Hang in there. Oh, and about the warning sounds, chattering teeth is a warning to back off. If they growl they've just about had it and you won't get another chance. I watched the baby Tanzania Peaberry rastling with her mom on Saturday. Tanzania must have gotten a bit rough. Mocha chattered her teeth and when Tanzania didn't back off she started to growl. Finally she had enough and flipped Tanzania onto the ground, held her down for a bit before releasing her. If Tanzania had not been her daughter or had been more aggressive I think Mocha might have given her a good bite.

yeah, degus have 2 different kinds of bites - the most common kind is the exploratory/affectionate nibble, where they just kind of grab your finger with their teeth and don't really bite down. mine used to do that to me when they were less sure of me. the other kind is the aggressive kind, which i usually get when rumble is in a bad mood and wants out of the cage, and i'm blocking his way. he'll bite and scratch at my hand because he knows i'll jerk it away. but then i close the cage door, so ha ha ha poo on him. XD
when i have my degus out in the bathroom, if they start to chatter their teeth, i give them a treat, to let them know it's okay. that usually calms them down for the rest of the time. frenzy has started jumping in my lap for a treat, and sometimes we can get him to hop into our hands too, though he usually doesn't stay there long. they'll also groom my hair if i put my head up to the open cage door. XP

It took a while for me to trust my degu and for him to trust me. It's all about trust when you pick them up and pet them. For a while I picked my older one up with gloves or a sock because he would always bite me and it didn't feel to good. Now he will nibble on me because I think he got the point that it doesn't feel to good. When I first bought him I would put the glove on my hand and put some alfalfa or a treat in my hand and he would get on my hand and eat it.
After a week or so of doing that I would put food in my other hand that didn't have a glove and eventually he'd get used to my hand and how I smell. He still has an attitude but that is just him being him and I accept it. I've got a bit of an attitude so why can't he :-) I hope you have fun and enjoy your pets!

Hi
I think everyone has pretty much said all there is about the noises, so I think that all I can add is that as long as you are patient, you will be rewarded!

I love it when they do that! The way they stuff as much as they can in their mouths, before someone tries to take it! Unless one has one end that one has the other.... Even my 4 week old babys take it and bumble over to their nest, its so cute!

that's normal. mine do it to each other all the time. they're just saying "this is mine! get your own!" i can usually avoid the issue when it comes to treats by giving each one a treat at the same time. for example, when i give them their weekly peanut, i just hold 2 in my hand, and each one will take one, run off to their separate corners, and enjoy. if one of them is foolish enough to try and nose in on the other one's treat, he gets squawked at, and sometimes gets his own peanut stolen!
