HI to all,
Haven't posted on here for a while, as I have been lucky enough to have two very healthy degus up till now. I am having trouble with my lil degu Oni. He has had a cold for the past 2 weeks or so. He has seen and vet and been given baytril. I have another appointment for him on Friday this week coming. He just looks all uncomfy and puffy and sneezy. (I know some goo's are prone to getting R.I.'s as I had another rescue group with one degu with the same issue.)
Does anyone have any advice on how to help Oni to recover? I am making sure the room he is in is warm and not chilly. They have lots of hay bedding and a warm place to sleep. I am regularly making sure their urine is cleaned up and that they arn't in a draft. I am using olbas oil on a tissue or in a bowl of hot water to infuse the room to help him breathe.
trouble is you feel so helpless as they arn't a cuddly creature by any means. So just administering the medicine is a feat in itself!!
Anyway,
Any idea welcomed.
Many Thanks.
Lucy.

Two methods of administering the meds that have had a fair amount of success with owners here is to drop it onto a sliver of almond and let it dry, then give it to the sick degu, or put it onto a piece of shreddie cereal. Perhaps try one of these methods?

When we needed to give ours medication shreddies worked a treat. Also check that the air is humid enough, central heating dries out the air and can irritate any breathing problems.

Sounds like you are doing a pretty good job. If you have any concerns before Friday, vets are usually happy to speak to you on the phone.
There are other antibiotics available, they aren't all effective against the same bugs.
You could explore humidity or steam treatment a bit further, in a hot steamy bathroom, or any other way you can set it up safely.
