So I've posted a couple questions before about the degu I adopted, and I've been doing a lot of reading but I still have more questions I'm hoping you guys can help with.
Someone had asked me what type of cage I had and I found a picture online of the exact same cage and it's a ferret nation double layer. It's about 5 1/2' tall by 4' wide. I tried to upload the picture, but the site would not allow it even though the j-peg pic-size was only 297kb. Here's a link to the cage ilderdilla.blogspot.ca/2011/07/my-ferret-nation-cage.html if anyone wants to see how big it is.
Right now, I have the mother and 4 babies in the top layer of the cage and my rats in the bottom layer of the cage. The momma keeps sniffing at the rats through the hole in the floor (i covered it with rabbit wire) and chittering at them. The rats don't seem too concerned and just ignore her. I think the babies are all males, and am starting to get attached to them. I'm thinking about keeping them, but am not sure how to do this without the mother getting pregnant. Can they be neutered? If i move the rats, would they be ok, in the bottom part of the cage or do they need more room than that for 4 of them? It is an extremely large cage, but I'm not sure.
Three of the babies seem to be normal, but the fourth has been odd since day one. He'll leave the nest and 'peep' continuously until the mother comes and retrieves him. He does this about 8000 times a day and i think the mother is getting fed up. Today she seems to be ignoring his cries and he just keeps 'peeping' louder and louder. I've read that babies can be emotionally disturbed, is this a sign of it?
