I wonder if someone can give me some advice. We are looking to change our degus cage to something much more spacious for them. They currently use the pets at home cage but it's too small and they are becoming unhappy. we have seen a cage which is used for rabbits as an outdoor hutch, it's got 2 levels and plenty of space for running around. Its made of wood but we can alter it to suit the degus with shelves and proper metal on the front of it. i have tried putting a picture on here but won't let me. would this type of cage be ok for them as a proper home.

I think it would help if we saw the photo, to attach a photo you need to host it on photobucket or Flickr first and then link with image tags (there are further instructions in the picture area of the forum)

It is so tiny that it is really hard to make out the details of it. Can you tell us what the dimensions of that cage are? Height, depth, length?

Sorry for small photo, it's the only one I could get attached. size of cage is w153cm, h123cm, d62cm. has 2 tiers 4 separate doors. its the bluebell hideaway outdoor hutch from pets at home. For rabbits and guinea pigs.

Ok, the size is good but there is a problem with hutches as they are made from treated wood and they are made from planks and battens with lots of edges that degus can easily get their teeth into and chew, so I wouldn't advise getting a hutch.
We normally recommend something like the Aventura, Xtrail, Explorer, but you do have a few options. It is possible to combine cages to make something bigger, some people stack up the Pets@home thickets cage. Home made cages are popular on here, or vivariums are becoming more available that are suitable if you make sure they don't have chewable edges and have enough ventilation.

Thank you for the advice. I've seen the cages you recommend and they look lovely and big for 2 little degus. Just shame they are so expensive. On the other hand it's going to be their home so money shouldn't come into it. The ph cage is expensive and you don't get much for your money.
With the explorer cage what do you do for the ladders, the ladders don't look safe for them to use. Could you take out the ladders and attach wooden shelves for them to climb up the cage.

Yes, the cost of the PAH cage is very annoying when you discover it isn't really big enough, it's crazy that they sell degus but not a cage suitable for them. It is possible to pick them up second hand if you like the design of the cage and wanted to combine two or three together. This thread shows you the type of thing you can do with the Explorer type cage deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15977/paradise-critter-nation You can use wooden ramps instead of ladders, just roughen up a wooden plank and attach via one method or another. The Aventura is probably the best of this type of cage at the moment, I think it has metal trays (rather than plastic) and is £150 at Littlepetwarehouse, which I think is the cheapest. Also you could have a browse through our 'show us your cage' thread for more ideas deguworld.proboards.com/thread/6918/show-cage?page=34

Thank you I showed my other half the cages you mentioned and he doesn't like them. I've told him he needs to use his diy expertise then to build a new cage. Need to decide on what to build it from now. So many ideas on the forum.
