I have a male degu who currently has a prolapsed penis, I have taken him to the vet last week and was giving some anti-inflammatory medication and some ointment. This was the vets first time ever seeing a degu and he's never seen a prolapsed penis in rodent before either, his suggestion was to try the medication and ointment for a week and hope for improvement. The next step he said would be to put him under sedation and put a small stitch in to hold the penis in place. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the happen and any advice on what to do. There hasn't been much change since I've taken him to the vets he does seem to be much more content now that he is on some medication.

Hi Iv had some.experience in this two if my degus have had prolapsed penises one being last weekend why medication has he given you? Can you see any signs of an infection to prolapse and is it a full prolapse or only slight? In my experience these can take some time to fully heal I kept applying ky jelly or vasiline to keep everything lubricated and my vet did say if I could try Massaging the hood or cone back over the prolapse too which obviously isn't that easy, make sure it's kept clean too hope this helps some.what x

Hi I have had this happen a couple of times with my degus, both times were post-op and caused by swelling. I was prescribed Canaural ear drops for our two and it did the trick clearing both up although one did take quite a while to fully heal. Our vets also mentioned the possibility of a stitch if it was a long term issue. I also remember someone on the forum saying their degu had this as a result of fur getting wrapped around the base of the penis inside the cone causing it to swell. I would also take their dust bath out because it can make matters worse.

I was given some Metacam as an anti-inflammatory and the ointment is Flamazine cream which I apply two times a day, it is a full prolapse. I've taken the dust bath out and been cleaning his bedding daily. I will pick up some Vaseline and try applying that too. He makes sure to let me know he isn't happy with all this fussing over him, and he doesn't enjoy taking his medication very much. I'm hoping he'll recover soon

I would be a bit careful that Vaseline might stop the Flamazine being absorbed properly. I don't know what the consistency of the Flamazine is like, would it be possible to really lather it on so that it acts as a lube?
Is there any indication of the reason for the prolapse? Sometimes there can be infection higher up or even bloating can cause the penis to get pushed out.

I think the Flamazine cream is acting as some sort of lube, I've been putting quite a bit on twice a day. There is a lot of swelling, and the skin around the area seems to have some black splotchy areas? I think there could be some sort of infection. I had tried putting the medicine on some treats and it worked for a while but he has started to figure it out and refuse the treats. I think I will book him back in with the vet for a check up as nothing has improved much, he is still quite happy and content but I feel that it must be so uncomfortable for him.

I think going back to the vet is a good idea. It might be worth trying some oral antibiotics if there is some infection that the ointment can't reach.
You could try putting the meds on nut slices, like brazil nut, the stronger smell sometimes works as a good disguise.

I know it's not the easiest thing to do but we were told to try and encourage the penis back into the cone when it was lubricated using a cotton bud....certainly the weirdest thing I have done to a pet but it seemed to help. Has it retracted at all?

It hasn't retracted at all, the swelling seems to have gone down a bit today. I am almost finished the cream, I will pick up some Vaseline when I run out of the cream and try encouraging it to go back in. If that doesn't work I'll have to bring him back in to vet next week

The the black splotch areas around it doesn't sound very good to me that sounds like a really bad infection or maybe the the tissue in those areas is diying due to lack of blood because of the swelling? orrr could it be where dirt had gotten into a wound that's caused the swelling causing it to look black? :S I'd defo go back next week! Poor little thing do you know if he's weeing properly?

KY jelly would be a much better option than the Vaseline. Just make sure it is plain, not any of the ones that have sensations to them.
