Hi, I was wondering if you could help. I purchased my first ever Degu on Sunday from the pet adoption centre at my local pets at home. When we first met he (Rolo) was very interactive and felt comfortable being held. His previous owner had housed him and his brother an unfortunately his brother passed away and the owners family changed so they gave him up. He has never bitten anyone but he does make the warning noises if he feels upset or threatened. I purchased him and took him home and let him settle in his cage. I handled him later that night and went to bed.
Since then Rolo refuses to leave his cage or be handled by anyone. I have tried everything including encouraging to come to the door of the cage for a treat and leaving the door open for him to run around.
Is there something I am doing wrong.
Please help.

Hi Rolo14 and welcome to the forum! We're a friendly bunch who just have the interest of degus at heart.
Poor Rolo may just be feeling upset at all the changes in his life recently, degus are sensitive souls.
I know it's hard, but can you find patience to let him be for a little while. Speak gently to him, he will eventually figure out that you mean no harm and that you provide the food! Maybe offer treats but don't expect him to come, wait for him to be ready.
I will be the first to ask, are you planning on getting him a friend? Degus hate to live alone without their own kind, please read around this forum for more information about introducing.

Thank you for your comment.
I will look into seeing if I can find him a friend and see if things improve.

Hello Rolo14! Degus are definitely sensitive souls, as Ilikedegus has told you, and changes, especially such large ones like Rolo has recently experienced, he has very likely been grieving his losses. How is he doing now? How are you and he getting along? Have you found him a friend?
