I own two female degus, and recently one of them, Luna, has developed a dark brown marking that wasn't there before (or at least it was definitely not this noticeable). It is located above her tail, and travels up her back in a symmetrical half-dumbbell-like shape. It is very distinct. I just want to check that developing markings of this kind is not a sign of bad health, as I can't seem to find much about it anywhere.
She has had no previous health problems other than shedding her tail - but it was a couple of years ago and to this day I am unaware of how exactly it happened. However, she recovered from it well, with no complications. Other than this mystery marking, Luna also appears to be healthy in all other respects just now - no changes in behaviour, teeth look good and there are no bald patches or anything of that kind. The marked fur feels no different than usual and she doesn't mind me petting her. I have never had any health issues with my other degu either.
The only change in environment was a coconut shell I gave them. I bought it in a pet shop and it was marked okay for degus, so I hid some treats in it. Now they just use it as a second bed, which I thought was kind of odd because it's not a very big space for two degus! Other than that I'm using the same products.
So I'm not too worried, because it doesn't seem to be anything serious, but I thought I'd be better to ask than to leave it - just in case!
thank you, a paranoid degu owner c:

Sometimes degus will go through a dramatic molt that can change the appearance of their fur significantly. This is not a serious thing, but it can look pretty weird. It sounds like that is what you are seeing on your girl. I wouldn't worry about it, but do keep an eye on her. If you start to see balding, have a good look to see if there is any skin irritation, such as redness or swelling. However, I don't expect that you will see anything like this, it is most likely a sudden molting that has occurred.
