Popped into keydell in horndean today to with one of the guys I cAre for, only to find 3 pretty unwell looking degus one a lot worse than the others they all hD very over grown teeth the bottom teeth growing apart and the top sets like I sharp point!! They all had snotty noses and visible wetness Around the mouth the worst one was very lethargic and swollen looking mouth : I reported this to staff and all I got was " I don't see what the problem Is" And "they were fine this morning" I told them they all need to see a vet and explained about the teeth but they really didn't seem bothered at All, I'm so so angry they all look so sick , how they think they all look normal and healthy is beyond me, Anyone local to keydell don't suppose you can pop in And have a look and report it again? The more complaints the better chance they have of seeing a vet! Was also wondering about reporting to the RSPCA Im so worried the really sick one needs to see vet ASAP There kept on the hot green house with the birds and rabbits advice plzzzz

My partner and I would suggest reporting that to RSPCA. If they really are as bad as you say, and if the staff really were as ignorant and neglectful as you say then I'm pretty sure that constitutes animal neglect/cruelty. I'm not sure how much experience the RSPCA has with degus, but they can at least intervene and get the degus to a vet! It's worth reporting it as soon as possible, just in case- all you're doing by reporting is giving people information, from which they can make a decision. You should never feel bad about reporting something, it's always better to be safe than sorry, and you may end up saving those degu's lives.

I would take pictures and report it to the RSPCA, they shouldent be allowed to sell animals if they keep them in such bad conditions.

I suppose they could have been unwell when they arrived. But the careless attitude the staff have is concerning.

I think the fact that they aren't planning on getting them to the vet is the key here, definitely report it!!

These places will take in pets to rehome because they know you will then buy your supplies from them it's a commercial tactic and they should not be allowed to take them in when then cannot identify health issues report them!

No they have to pass it on to an officer who will review the case and decide wether they need to get involved which I'm sure they will hopefully today or tomorro

Oh I do hope so!! To me that sounds like lots of red tape and politics, but hopefully it is more a quick phone call to the officer, and then said person jumping in their car to zip right over and knock some sense into them while carting out the little goos to go see the exotics specialist!

For other people who might have similar issues from pet shops, garden centres etc. sometimes you have to report to the local council instead of the RSPCA (I don't know why, maybe depends on area of the country?? But when I wanted to complain about a local pet shop for overcrowding and stress I had to contact a council inspector to check it out). Glad you got it reported ok, hopefully they will see the error of their ways or if no improvement will be stopped from having them.
