Stumpy will not eat or drink and is struggling to breath.
I found stumpy hiding at the back of a box yesterday wheezing. I brought her straight to the vet who gave her an injection of antibiotics. This afternoon I found her in the same box, breathing heavely and noticed that she had not eaten since Sunday night. I doubt that she is drinking either. I brought her to the vet's again, and today they gave her 2 injections, antibiotics and steriods.
I fear this may be the end for Stumpy. I had a bad experience with her brother Grumpy 2 years ago, following advice from a greedy vet who just wanted money. grumpy had a blockage at the back of his nose, I was told and the only thing to do was to place him in a plastic container. I used a 2 litre bottle with the bottom cut off and then secured by slidding the 2 parts together. Grumpy was put in the bottle twice a day, and an inhaler was sprayed into the bottle, the the lid closed. He had to stay in there for 10 minutes each time, because the vet said he would hold his breath when then inhaler was sprayed. After a year of this and other bad advice from the vet I had to put him down. The inhaler caused him to balloon, and I think in the end scrambled his brain. He was eating the sand in the sand bath. His hair started falling out and his teeth became over grown. Stupidly I did not notice the teeth becomming over grown, and when I did I had just moved home after a very stressful few months before hand, so I failed to notice his teeth had become a problem. When I saw this I had to try to find a new vet. The one I found was worse than the previous one, and would not bear down his teeth for me, and told me I could clip then with a clipper the is used for clipping dogs nails. I was desperate to I went home and tried to do so myself. In the struggle that ensued a tooth fell out, and grumpy was crying so much, I gave up. The next day I found a local vet who said Grumpy was suffering and nothing could be done for him, so he was put down.
Stumpy has been a lone degu since, and I have done my very best for her. I have her cage next to my bed, and the door left open, so she sleeps with my most nights. I have sealed of the garden and when i am at home and the weather is good I let her run about in the garden. She seems happy enough except she does not talk anymore and stopped doing so last year. She used to sit on my shoulder and yap away. So now she has this illness, and I am at a loss. Maybe she ate something in the garen that poisoned her. But I fear it could be the same illness Stumpy had, and I do not want to put her through that.
While at the vets she opened her mouth really wide, while i was holding her up, to try to look at her teeth. But i saw her teeth a few days ago, so they looked find, and she has not been squeeking or showing any sign of pain. So I think it may have just been part of her stuggle to breath, and the stress of being examined.
I am trying eveything to try to get her to eat or drink something, but she turns away from everything. I have found a recipe on one of the other treads and have baked her a treat, which has been left to cool down, so fingers crossed she will eat tonight. Earlier she took part of a peanut from me, but afther a minute of looking for somewhere to sit and eat it just dropped it. I have read that after 3 days with no food or water a degu will die.
So, now if she is dying, is it ok to sit her on my lap out in the garden, as the weather is good, or will this cause her stress? I do not want to have her put down, until I am sure nothing more can be done.
Any suggestions?
