The new cage build is underway. We started off with a terrarium from Amazon which is 150 x 60 x 60 high. We've now lined the inside surfaces with white faced hard board. Inserted a full depth/width platform made from plywood covered in the white faced hardboard and edged with metal strip. This is at roughly half the height of the overall cage.
I've edged around the door frame with metal strip We've also made another smaller platform to go under the hole of the main platform which we need to put in. Then there's the upper cage part to add on the top. We've got some pine batons to make a frame 150 x 60 by 25cm high which will then be covered in mesh. The front part of it will be hinged so we can access it all. It will look roughly like this We'll also need to cover the top of the upper ledge around the skylight and put the metal edging around that too. What we're not sure about is whether we need to put any ventilation holes in the side walls. The front is glass doors and the top third of the cage is all mesh and open so not sure if we need it or not. Overall the cage will be 150wide x 60deep x 85high which should give my two degus ample space. I've also got some log ramps, a flying saucer and other bits and bobs to go in there too. Can't wait to get them in it :-)

Looking good, I think you will probably need some form of ventilation to the lower level if you mid shelf goes right up to the glass doors. That should look good when it's finished

Thanks Saddlers, we've added in a couple of "windows" in the side walls now. The bottom half is really taking shape now.
We just need to sort out the top mesh section now and add in some ramps and other bits and bobs.

VERY nice!!! Have you got them in already? I bet they are LOVING it!! I also bet you are ignored for the first week they are in there, LOL! They will be so busy getting to know it and enjoying it, they won't have interest in much more than a hello at the doors.

And they're in. The first one jumped in immediately and starting racing around investigating, the second was a little more reluctant but got there in the end. I can totally see now why they need so much room to run about, they've been having a whale of a time scurrying around the place.
I would like to add a few accessories to it but not sure what yet, probably a proper ramp onto the ledge where the mesh part starts and maybe even widen the ledge a bit. Is there anywhere in the UK where I can buy logs suitable for ramps/climbing on so I know they are safe? Thanks Diane

That is looking great, I also agree about those bridges from zooplus, they are brilliant for the price and our lot love having a perch or a chomp on them

Fantastic build you did there, how are they getting on in it? Have they chewed at the frame on the front?

Thanks. They seem very happy in there and have found their own little corner to build a nest in instead of using the nesting box. We lined the inside edges of the frame with metal angles so there's not much for them to chew on thankfully.
