So my degu is probably about 7 months old and he is extremely active, always running and playing. Last night his companion gave birth to a healthy liter of three. As previous research has told me, I separated the male from the mother as to keep them from mating again. Unprepared, I placed him in a large tuber ware bin with stuffing, food, and water. I covered the top of the bin with a blank canvas, making sure to allow oxygen to get through from the corners. In the morning, he was lifeless and still. He felt cold to the touch and has not eaten since. I placed him back with his family but his condition hasn't improved much. What should I do?

Are you sure he had enough oxygen?? Were there any chemicals In the Tupperware tub before hand? Is he still alive or breathing ? Can you get him to a vet ??

YIKES!! What a dreadful discovery. I am sure your heart is breaking with it, and the fear of what may be going on. How is he doing now? I do hope he is recovering?

Sparky is looking much better today, somewhat lethargic still but is now moving about and interacting with his family. He tried to mate with the mother again, so I'm taking that as a good sign! No, I made sure the box was empty of everything and I don't think he could have ingested any chemicals. The box had only held stuffed animals before. I at first believed it was due to a lack of oxygen but, even if that were true, it has been 2 whole days. Wouldn't his oxygen supply be restored by now? I'm keeping a very close eye on him and will take him to the vet if his health goes down again. For now, he only looks extremely tired

So glad he's OK, I was worried for him as I'm sure others on here were.
I don't want to anthropomorphise, but as degus are both closely involved in the care of their young, I was actually wondering if Sparky was "traumatised" by leaving his mate and their litter; as much my being put into solitary confinement as anything else.
Not that you did the wrong thing by trying to prevent him mating with her again. Do you have a plan to prevent more babies?
