That sounds awful, Yasmin. Poor Lilac and poor you. Difficult!

yasmin - thinking of you. Similar situation we had, similar judgement call: We had an elderly degu with root overgrowth issues. For a year he had regular tooth trims, Metacam daily. If he managed to eat, drink and take himself to the window-ledge to sunbathe then we assumed he still "valued" his own life. One day he just lay in the nest, wouldn't even drink. We knew then he'd had enough and took him to be put down. I know this is a hearbreaking time for you; remember she is having the very best life she could have, in the wild or with a less caring owner she might not be as comfortable.

Go with your gut instinct. Unless you get a definite sign like Ilikedegus, there is no perfect timing.
Lilac is such a trooper, and you too, Yasmin.

Lilac is still eating but I doubt much is going down. She has both eyes closed and now seems very miserable. I have made an appointment for the vet to see her tomorrow at 4:30 pm. However, last night Sean stopped eating and his cheeks are wet with drool. He's made a nest for himself under a wheel and hides there. I so far have not been able to tempt him to eat anything. If I can't get him an appointment with the vet tomorrow otherwise I will be taking him in instead of dear Lilac, and making an appointment for her for Tues. or Wed or whenever I can get one.

It might be a bit cheeky, but take both along to the appointment. I've never known a vet turn away any animal in distress. I really feel for you, as I went through something similar with other animals. You love your babies, but feel powerless to help.
Hugs x

I second what Bouncy says. I would just take them both in as well . . . unless you know your vet well enough to know he would take issue with that.

Fortunately, they gave me an appointment right before Lilac's.
(Years ago I had a similar situation with two degus – Azure with teeth issues and Rei with tattered ears – needing to go in but just one appointment. The receptionist told me to bring in both degus so I did but when I saw the vet, he'd only look at one. So I had to choose which one. I made the wrong choice.)

Lilac is no longer with us. Rest in peace, homegirl. I love you so, so much. (I can only hope that, when we die, we go over the rainbow bridge too to join all of our animal friends.)

I hadn't quite realised how old she was until I saw your updated signature! You have done an amazing job getting Lilac to almost 8yrs, I honestly think you have triumphed in the face of such terrible dental disease to get her to such a good age and enjoying life right to the end. Take heart. I'm sure this is very encouraging for other people in your position.

You have done an amazing job getting Lilac to almost 8yrs, I honestly think you have triumphed in the face of such terrible dental disease to get her to such a good age and enjoying life right to the end. Take heart. I'm sure this is very encouraging for other people in your position. It was in March 2014 that the vet said that there was not much we could do for her except palliative care in the form of antibiotics and pain relief. She lasted a year and a half from that point. A good portion of the credit goes to Lilac. I did not have to force-feed her the Baytril (she drank it right from the syringe) or the Metacam (she readily ate the peas I put the drops of it on). This minimized the stress of managing her issues for both her and me. And she tried to eat anything that I offered her – so she played an active part in the trial and error of finding what she could and could not eat. As well, she remained her feisty self and would squeal and push her daughters away when she was being fed/medicated.
