Hey guys, long time no talk.
So today was the day i had to put him down. It was a really hard decision to make but he wasn't getting any better, he was getting worse. One week ago he lost all appetite and his incisors started to get pretty long. Two days ago i noticed his lower incisors were pointing outwards and his upper incisors were tugged away in the roof of his mouth. He was constantly scratching his mouth with his paws while sneezing and making weird poses, it was not a sight for sore eyes. That ultimately was the trigger for my decision. I know the vet can somewhat fix the incisors by clipping them but in the end it would have been a lost cause.
I just got home from the vet and his buddy misses him already i can tell. I wanted to go ahead now and clean the cage for him to let go better. But i have been awake since i made the appointment yesterday morning so i feel i'm about to fall over. I am going to bury him tomorrow and see him through to the end.
Thanks guys for all your support.

I am so sorry for your loss, Yamas! It is difficult when we know that an end is looming and that end rests somewhat in our hands. We had an older standard poodle that is just impossible to fatten up, and she has been losing weight bit by bit by bit. I've tried so many things, but have to be ever so careful as she has a finicky bowel and develops diarrhea so quickly and easily. Which then loses any gains she may have made. Anyway, as she grows weaker, I know her days are numbered too. I know how you have felt the last several weeks, and my thoughts are with you as you now grieve for his passing. Hugs to you!

Hey guys, I just finished up cleaning the cage, and it looks so empty with just the one. I want to start looking for some new companions to share the big cage with. But what i wanna know is, how do i know if he is not carrying the bacteria/whatever it is. The remaining degu doesn't sneeze or have trouble breathing. But he does some tiny cough like sounds out through his nose when dust bathing. I never noticed this before his friend got sick so maybe he has been doing it all along. Do i give him antibiotics just to be safe. Or do i just wait 2 weeks, or a month? deguconvert I'm sorry, i don't know what to say, it sucks

I'm sorry for your loss.
Could he just be clearing his nostrils after the sandbath if he only does it when sandbathing?
If you have any suspicions there may be an infection passed on, then I would talk to your vet about the likelihood and risks of this.

I'm very sorry too! It's a very hard decision to make Your other goo my just be sneezing cause of the dust so I'd just keep an eye on him and not panic for now.

I do wonder if the degu you lost might have actually had a physical problem that the vet never picked up on? Like rmazeds says, don't panic yet...

ilikedegusThe vet did tell me it could be something physical after both baytril and doxycycline didnt work out. She said an x-ray might show something but it was way to expensive for me.

Yes - we paid £75 for X-rays of Mr P's jaw, plus subsequent treatment costs.
I was a bit aghast but my other half insisted, the degus really are his kids.
Given that we could afford it at the time - no kids and both earning, it was worth doing because it did show that poor Mr P did have molar root overgrowth that was causing sinus problems, which enabled the vet to give him palliative care (painkillers and tooth burring mostly) to prolong his quality of life a bit longer.
You don't get little pets expecting huge vet's bills. When I was a kid, I had all sorts of rodents and never took one to the vet.
Mr P was one of 3 "rescue" brothers, all of whom had tooth problems; we don't know what diet they grew up on unfortunately. I have wondered if they were given up because of vet's bills.
I hope the remaining brother is doing OK?

Today i spoke with someone who just had 7 baby degus, and i'm supposed to get 2 males, when they can be taken from the mom. I told them about my situation, and to my surprise they have had a degu who had all the same symptoms, like sneezing and trouble breathing. He too got antibiotics but to no avail. They said the cause was airing out the room when it was cold, and the air circulation gave him pneumonia. I often air out my rooms in the house so i'm almost sure that's where mine got it from as well. So no more open windows, when it not boiling hot outside.
The remaining degu seems to be doing alright, but i think the sneezing in the dust bath has gotten more 'violent' since yesterday, but its still nothing like the other.

I'm glad you have come across a similar case and what sounds like the reason and cause, as you follow the same treatment of your home. If you are seeing an increase in sneezing, suspect that the cause is due to cold/cool air circulating through the house, and that if may have caused a pneumonia in your departed degu, I think you should have your vet look at him. If there is the possibility that he is also developing a pneumonia, the sooner you get on top of it, the greater the chance of beating it.
