Great, hopefully you'll work something out! Another thing is if you needed space for degu food, hay, woodshavings and extra toys you could think about building some cupboards into the cage as well? Here's an example of what I mean: The new cage for all three girls.

Yep, you are doing the right thing by working out their housing before you go ahead and get any degus Have you talked to your parents about the cost of making a larger cage, and changing some of your bedroom furniture? I don't want you to be disappointed! Also, don't forget how much room all their stuff takes up- there's a big bag of hay, a big bag of bedding, loads of smaller bags of food and herbs, sticks for chewing, playpen, spare boxes and tubes...maybe I'm a bit of a hoader but we have cupboard loads of degu stuff! And do think carefully about the noise they might make in the night, or possibly more likely, early in the morning. Anyway, it's a good idea to take some time to talk and think it all through, and while you are doing that you can be doing some reading about them - we have loads of information in sticky threads to get you started Did somebody already mention that a raised bed with drawers or other storage under could allow you to free up the space where you currently have a chest of drawers? Re the cage shelf height issue - I think the lower the shelf height is, the smaller the depth of (front to back) the shelf needs to be to allow access for cleaning and to allow some light in. If it was just one low shelf then it's not such a big deal and the degus might enjoy one dark level.
