Cool, thanks fred.
My OH is a mechanic so he's pretty good at 'engineering' type stuff so I'm sure he'd be able to rectify any issues with the bearing parts.

I don't think the varnish is a problem either. My girls have chewed the base a bit and the place mat a lot, but even though they've tried the tray itself they don't really chew it. Perhaps it tastes really bad for them or something. But none of mine have any health issues either

I tried mine out yesterday, I think the bearing feedback is extremely useful as I thought it would spin more when they tried it out. Clearly my finger on the build test applies more pressure than a Degu as I could use it fine but it didn't really turn when they were on it.
Having said that, does anyone know where I can adopt a toy Hamster as my girls were just more interested in nibbling it rather than running!?! Lol

Excellent - wonder what the CARA requirement would be?

ROFL! Degus should def have their own pet toy hamsters! ;D
I'm not sure you can really mess with the bearing, I think it's all sealed. If the ebay seller has multiple susans, it's probably worth asking them to pick out a free spinning one for you.
I sanded most of the varnish off mine, but they actually don't chew the main dish, miracle of miracles!
I got my goos interested in the dish by holding a treat just out of reach so they were running up the dish to try to get it.

A note of caution when ordering a lazy susan form ebay or similar. When you go to IKEA you can chose one than runs nicely, and not all do. So you may have to fiddle with the bearings (or whatever the technical term is). I definitely agree with this. I think I tried out about 7 turn tables before finding one that spun very easily. Some of them were quite sticky and needed a bit of effort to turn. My goos don't seem at all interested in nibbling the wheel. I'm not sure it tastes of anything to them? I have a Zhu Zhu (or Go Go) pet. I used that.

HEY!!! My kids have those!!! They make these little noises that would certainly catch the attention of the degus and that would get them wondering about the wheel. You are BRILLIANT!!

I think you'd be lucky to find a cheaper lazy Susan than Ikea, I've never seen one. Our dish is still going strong, it's a bit nibbled around the edge and it's a bit stiffer to turn from crud getting in the bearing, but Molly still likes it

I agree the one at IKEA is cheap £5.50 but they never have it in stock. So Iv checked places like amazon and they charge £10 plus £5 p&p and not too sure I wanna spend that much incase I get one that doesn't turn too well. Iv saw cheaper versions but not too sure if they are any good?

Have you tried Ikea recently? They had a problem sourcing them earlier in the year, but they are back in stock now, at least at my local branch, I bought one about two months ago and they had lots in stock, but not that many of them turned very freely. I think you can do a stock check online for Ikea.
I think if you have seen cheaper ones and they were big enough, turned freely and the wood looked OK, then it should be fine.
