That sounds like a good idea. You have done brilliantly, and good for you!!! As your vet gets more experience, he will get better and better at the tooth trimming. Which will be GREAT for you and for Kokoro! Thank you for letting us know.

We discourage the use of willow sticks, as they are considered toxic to degus. However birch, apple, and crabapple are all safe to use. You sure? www.petsathome.com/shop/woodlands-small-pet-willow-sticks-15908 says they're fine for both chinchillas and guinea pigs. I bought them for my babies from there, thinking they'd be okay, and I have noticed they sneeze sometimes...it's not dust, as the bedding is dust-extracted wood shavings, and although the room can get cold it isn't that cold that *I* can feel as bad and there's no draughts where they are. Edit: Are there any places where I can buy safe sticks for them? I know I could collect them myself for free, but I'd feel safer getting them from a shop at the moment at least until I learn about the right kinds of trees :-)

Well, I am mainly quoting the information I have learned on Degutopia, but Nightwishraven has said that in German degu circles they have no fears about using willow with their degus. So, you just have to decide for yourself, really. It sounds like it isn't as frightful as I have believed.

I've taken out the sticks for now (will get some kiln dried pine blocks for them to gnaw on in a day or so) and I will see if they stop sneezing. It might actually have been that they room they play in is a bit dusty, so I will find out soon enough and if it continues I'll have a good clean out of the room and see if their sneezing continues still :-)
