This is thought as a companion page to the 50% natural nutrition project which gives a brief overview where we can order components for our natural mixes. I would suggest that ideally posts here should only contain the link to the company, experiences with their service, and a link to threads where the products are described or shown in pictures. Since I have so far bought everything in local pet shops and garden centres, I can only give the links to the three main manufacturers whose products can be found in many local shops, i.e. Burns, Burgess Excell and Rosewood Naturals. kat – could you please copy to here the relevant information from your blog so that the listing of internet resources can be started properly?

Hi, Sorry about the delay in getting this up Fred. I have recently ordered dried natural foods from The Hay Experts and dried flowers from Shelled WarriorsI was really happy with the products, prices and delivery times from both of these companies. If you click here it will take you to my blog. Post number 2 has more details about my orders, links to the products ordered and close up photos of what arrived. 10/10 for both stores Has anyone else ordered online and wants to share sources? Kat x

For those in the US and Canada, maybe try this one: www.goodhopebotanicals.com/index.htm look under the categories of Potpourri Ingredients, and Herbs and Spices. There are quite a few that are dried whole flowers or petals and dried whole leaves, not just powdered stuff. I haven't ordered from them yet, but they have more choices than any other US site I've seen yet, prices don't look scary, you can order as little as a pound of each, a $25 minimum order, and they charge shipping based on UPS or Fedex, based on weight, so it's probably reasonable. Looks like it has potential. When I figure out what I want, I think I will give it a try. Ordered the kaytee "timothy hay with marigolds" from major pet supplier, came today. In the top 5 inches of the bag of hay, I found ONE dried flower, and a few stray dried petals. Cannot see any others through the clear part of the side of the bag. The bag of "hay with carrots" has a palm-ful of dried carrot bits visible in the middle, against the side, and that's all. Fortunately, they were buy one, get one free, or I'd be really upset at paying a premium price for basically a bag of hay. Thinking buying the flowers from another source like this Good Hope Botanicals and mixing it myself is definitely going to be the way to go.

I've had a look at the site, and the potpourri mixes all have essential oil fragrances mixed in with them. I would definitely NOT give these to the degus. However, if you look under the herbs and spices tab you will find quite a few potential things that can be ordered through them. I've not looked through the complete alphabet of their selections, but I do see some things that I think would be good!

winic1 I would send them an email asking how the the herbs and spices are processed. If there are no additions of e.g. preservatives, some of them could make very good ingredients of natural mixes.

DRIED ROSE PETALSI bought 50 grams of organic edible rose petals from this seller on ebay. I am pleased with them and the boys like them too. They are £2.89 plus 75p postage for one pack. It is a lot better value to buy them from here rather than the pet section. Link to listingKat x

I've just made an order from www.chinchillas2shop.co.uk -they seem to have a lot of choice, and the items were dispatched very quickly after ordering.

I could ask the futterparadies about the posibility to send food to UK. That would be great, David. Although we have found some suitable products, it doesn't compare to their range. I am sure that if postage could be kept at a reasonable level, they mayt find a lot of interest here.

To get bird seed without pellets and additives, look for "Sprouting Mix". These are seed mixes designed to be sprouted or grown and then fed to the birds. So there are no pellets, no vitamins, nothing extra which would only grow mold when you wet the seeds to sprout them. a typical parakeet or small bird mix will have all kinds of millets and grasses and sunflower types, etc.
They may be a bit rich in the oilseeds, but as a treat, or to mix in with plain millet, it's an easy thing to find.

abirose posted this link www.ratrations.com/ in another thread ( deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=links&thread=9564&page=1 ). It seems a really good find and should be well worth checking out. They have quite a lot of stuff that is suitable for degus. The range of seeds they have is great and while some of the dried plants are chopped down too much to be interesting for degus, some like the bay leaves or the marigold flowers look very good. They also sell the Rosewoods Naturals range. Pricing and p&p seem very reasonable.

Fred, what's about futterparadies? Do you have any news? Is an order in preparation? I'm very anxious about your experiences if you order there.
Apropos ratrations.com, they have also a sister-page with birdfood. Probably the offer is similar or partly the same...?

I found the sister birdfood site last week (junglegold) and thought it looked interesting, but the rat one is even better, they have some dried veg that might be suitable, and tons of different seeds, and the marigolds look great value. I'll probably put an order in in the new year, I'll report back.
I've been pleased with the Zooplus JR Farm stuff I ordered. The coarse feed and flower mixes are great.
Has anyone noticed that the Rosewood Naturals range has some stuff in it that is identical to the JR Farm stuff, except more expensive for less?

I am not sure whether this is new or whether I missed it so far but JR Farm have a site in English: www.jr-farm.de/englisch/index.htm. While they don't supply directly, this site may be useful providing an overview over their complete range as well as more information about individual products.

Fred, what's about futterparadies? Do you have any news? Is an order in preparation? I'm very anxious about your experiences if you order there. No David, I haven't ordered yet. My problem is that my girls are such enthusiastic consumers of fresh greens that I am not even half through my original mixes. And to be honest, the newly discovered ratrations seems to be a good alternative for some things like seeds. I will have to look into this in more detail and compare their ranges.
