Here's the info on our home made wheel. It's a 33cm dog bowl rotating on a flange bearing, similar to these www.bearing-king.co.uk/metric-4-bolt-hole-flange-bearings-budget-brand We used a 1/2" bearing from ebay, meaning it takes a 1/2" bolt or threaded rod up the middle. The bearings a really heavy duty, but the degus turn the wheel no problem at all on this version and also on the one we made using a roses tin. You only need screws and bolts to make the wheel, no welding. You mount the four corners of the bearing to your frame or direct to the cage/cabinet. Then a bolt or threaded rod goes through a hole you put in the bowl, through the middle of the bearing and is attached with washers & nuts on both sides. You can see the hole in the wood on the rear view pic which allows access to tighten up the central bolt at the back. We strengthened the base of the bowl with a metal plate because it was bonging like a dinner gong when they jumped out onto the branch in front. We mounted the bearing on the wood, so that the bowl is tilted back slightly to provide a flatter running surface for the goos, as I am a bit unsure about the slope on the side of the dog bowl. The only downside is it takes up quite a lot of room, especially as it is quite deep including the bearing. We also added a couple of extra strips of wood to prevent goo access to the bearing. Hope you like

If I could get rid of the wooden stand and find a straight sided container with a stiff base, it would be really simple.

That looks really good. I like that the degus cant get at any parts that they are not supposed to. Is it attached to the cage at all?

There's just one angle bracket holding it in place - it's partly visible at the top of the wooden bit.

One thing I would add is some sort of small bowl glued over the ugly nut and bits in the middle of the inside...something barely larger than it which would make it safer for the degus as well as look nicer (but also make it impossible for you to take apart :-P) One of these dust caps would do the trick if you want to go down that route. There are bigger that they look. www.shelfridges.co.uk/flyingsaucerwheel/I bought one when I was making my own wheels but I ended up building in a different way in the end.
