Thank you Meg!
My name is Aimee, and i have recently bred a litter of baby Degus. Having and learing about babys has left me with alot of knowledge, and sleepless nights, so i think its only fair that i share what i know with other parents or parents to be! Dont hesitate to ask, every one out there, ill try my best to advise on my experiences and research. I also have a sucsesfully neutered Degu, so i think that like any Baby forum, prevention is also good!!

Hello! One of my females had 4 healthy pups 2 days ago! Cute just isnt a strong enough word to describe them! Today they have been scrambling about in the bottom of the cage for a bit while mum watches them carefully, and guards them from me of course! While I'm delighted, this is a kind of miracle birth, as both my males had a hormone 'contraceptive' implant each, lasting 12 months...except it must have been in only 6 months when mum got pregnant. I opted for these implants as a safer option having very nearly lost a previous male during the neutering process. I await further info from my degu specialist vet, who is contacting the company who make the implants. Any advice is very welcome, especially from anyone with experience of these implants. Many thanks.

WOW!! I've never actually heard of them . . . and it's too bad they were not as preventive as you had hoped. I've no idea what to advise, but would be very interested in hearing what you are told by the producers of the contraceptive. On the flip side, congratulations on your new little pups . . . they are incredibly adorable, aren't they?

My vet has now spoken to the company re the implant failing and apparantley its very rare but not impossible, like a human contraceptive implant I guess, and I now have to consider seperating the new parents (which will make their lives miserable) risking the implant, or neutering. Not sure what to do.

Hi! I cant remember the name of it, will ask the vet again, it's a tiny hormone implant which is injected just under the skin at the back of the neck, and releases hormones to reduce testicle size to prevent sperm production. Should last a year but alledgedly you can tell if it works or not by testicle size. They also make them for dogs. They are like the contraceptive implants some ladies have in the arm. The vet told me the company reported its very rare for the implant to fail, but that like any contraceptive it isnt 100% safe, and that they are looking into it to report back to the vet. My little ones are doing great thanks, I love them! They are so cute and getting more investigative outside the nest by the day, so lovely to watch. Mum is very protective of them, and is feeding them very well. Dad builds the nest up daily and it's getting enormous! ;D
