Basically my eldest Degu absolutely adores destroying anything she can and it's gotten quite costly, as you can imagine.
We bought them a little hut house, you know because winter is here and they needed somewhere more cosy to snuggle up together. She has ripped the roof off and one of the walls! Not chewed but literally ripped it right off and now it's laid on the cage floor.
So does anyone know of any toys I could possibly make that aren't too expensive and would keep her occupied for even a little?

Stuff eggboxes with hay/dried dandelion and sprinkle a few oats in and do it up they enjoy ripping that up. If you go to the cinema and ask if they have any spare poster tubes there really thick cardboard which I love using plus there free (I imagine you can buy them at a post office) There the "disposable" toys I tend to use!

Do you have some basic tools at home ? My degus enjoy gnawing timber as well as plywood, no matter in which form: shelves, tables, labyrinths etc. They all have some branches in their cages, but much more interesting is wood from DIY stores. It's quite easy to make houses, tables etc. on your own and they cost only little money compared to all these things sold in pet shops.

I agree that it's good to buy some wood and make a couple of houses and even random shapes from odd shaped bits of wood screwed together. For indestructible things you could try terracotta pots, mine like perching on upside down pots, or you can lay a big one on its side for a shelter.

Terracotta? Just a couple of days ago I got a terracotta dish for our youngest as they've grown and they didn't fit in the dust bath I had for them.
I think I'm definitely going to build a few little things then, my Grandpa is a carpenter so I'm sure he could help me as well.
Thank you!

the mum betty is just the same will destroy anything she can get her little paws on.. was fed up of poos being flung all over the floor so used perspex sheeting to go around the edges of cage, wedged on the outside , from the moment i put them on she would take great delight in pushing them off. i would pick them up.. 2mins later on the floor again! .. sure she was laughing as she did so! ... i have now drilled holes and used wire haha.. new i would get the better of her lol ...anyhow i stop in the street every time i see a carpet fitter as the roles of cardboard the carpet are around are mint.. they are around abouts 15ft long i cut them in to three and stack them using thin wire to keep them together.. cutting holes in each so they line up and with wire tie them to the inside back of my biggest cage..unsure if i have explained that too well will try and get a pic.. they love it gives them hours of fun, ready made tunnels and somewhere to hide often see half a dozen heads poking through the holes! they chew the ends obviously but takes months to get through.. then find a lovely carpet fitter again lol..i was at work and saw a carpet van outside the next door house popped out told him what i wanted it for.. (they only recycle them anyway).. the lovely man took the saw out of his car and cut it into three for me so it fitted in the car! SORTED!
